Today we observed a butterfly (head, wings, and scales on the wings), an empty chrysalis, and a mealworm pupa. The butterfly’s head was the favorite by far!

Today, in MicroMonsters, we looked at a feather and a fly. We were super excited to see the metallic sheen on the fly’s wings.
MicroMonsters Update! »« High Frequency Words Are All Around Us!
We have integrated two new ways to practice reading our high frequency words. We now have a path of footprints on our floor that the students read every time they enter or exit the classroom. The path of footprints are high frequency words tied to our first curricular theme in reading. We also added high frequency words to our lockers, that the students read every time they open and close their lockers. The words on their lockers and the footprints will change throughout the course of the year.
Our insects have changed! Take a look to see silworms hatched, waxworms beginning the process of making their cocoons, painted lady butterflies in their chrysalises, and mealworms eating and exploring.
Here is a website that gives you every Dolche word list, so that you may practice reading them with your child. The Dolche word list gives 220 words that are the most commonly used in children’s literature. The more fluency your child has with these words, the more natural a reader they will become.

Our classroom insects have arrived. We will be observing the life cycles of waxworms, mealworms, silkworms, and painted lady butterflies. Here are some pictures of our new class pets…
First, I had to prepare the medium for the waxworms to live in and eat. It is made from baby cereal, glycerin, sugar, and water.
Next, I put the waxworm eggs into the medium.
Then, I opened the mealworm container and saw the larvae.
I gave the mealworms carrots to eat.
Finally, I put the painted lady larvae and silkworm eggs into a warm, light place.

The class will do their first observation of the insects on Tuesday!
Our class went on a nature walk today and collected some things we wanted to look at more closely using our microscopes. This is what we saw…
a dandelion flower, a clover leaf, a piece of wood, a rock, a blade of grass
and two different leaves!
